Dale Community Primary School Promoting Engineering Careers

GCA Structural Engineer, Rosie Stevenson, was part of a group of engineers promoting engineering as a career to girls aged 8 – 11 at Dale Community Primary School in Derby, through an after school STEM club.

The STEM club has been set up through Primary Engineer, an organisation which helps promote engineering to children. Rosie talked to the girls as part of their preparation for the Primary Engineer ‘Celebration Day’, where they had to present their engineering projects to a panel of judges.

They were quizzed about their designs, including the challenges they had come across during the design and construction process, what lessons they had learnt, and what they had enjoyed most about the STEM activity so far. Following this, she gave a short presentation on what a structural engineer does, and what it is like to be a structural engineer.

Rosie said: “I believe it is important to show children, and particularly girls, at a young age what opportunities are available to them in STEM careers. It is great to see that primary schools are promoting engineering, and it was clear from talking to the girls that they were really enjoying working on engineering related projects.”
