Historic & Conservation Engineering

GCA actively supports and promotes the core principles and best practice in conservation, restoration and historic building repair work by using sympathetic structural techniques.

It is often necessary to balance modern comfort and serviceability standards with inappropriate work on the frail structural elements and worn fabric found in listed buildings. We can offer advice on change of use where such change will affect the existing structure, as on projects such as Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club [right] and the Ribbon Factory in Coventry, [below]:

Our awards for historic and conservation work include:

A Highly Commended Certificate in the Best Design and Supervision category of the Design Construction Awards 2001/2002, for work carried out on Harston Rock Tramway Bridge from Staffordshire Moorlands / SRB Partnership.

The Institution of Structural Engineers, Midland Counties, Structural Awards, Structural Bridge Award for the sensitive design works associated with the improvements to the historic Tramway Bridges at Froghall on behalf of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council.

We prepared a condition survey report and repair strategy for the above garden wall which had fallen into disrepair (right).
